CHARLES MARINE CONTINUES INVESTMENT IN NEW PRODUCT INNOVATION AND QUALITY MANUFACTURING

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL (April 14, 2009) – In a market where manufacturers of marine equipment are faced with the challenges of declining boat sales and cautious consumer spending, Charles Marine continues to invest in new product development and U.S. manufacturing.  “We have faith in the industry and are investing our efforts in building a firm position to handle the needs of boaters once the market recovers,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager.  Charles Marine’s new products are as varied as their customers.  The company is launching a wide range of solutions for boat owners of small and mid-size vessels to megayachts and workboat operators.  “We’re constantly developing new products that simplify boaters’ lives,” St. Romain adds.

The new PM3 100 AC Power Management System provides yachts 65 feet long and up with the 200-amp service that more and more yacht owners demand today. Provided that shore power is available, the PM3-100 will supply a minimum of 100 amps and a maximum of 200 amps to the vessel’s main distribution point. The unit’s three-piece modular design allows boat builders to distribute its weight aboard the yacht as required. For yacht owners, the system lets them operate the maximum rated amount of AC electrical equipment without fear of exceeding load capacity.

“The PM3 100 expands our reach into the megayacht market, a section of the marine industry that is still holding strong.  We have the unique ability to customize products to suit the needs of OEMs,” states St. Romain.

Charles Marine has met the growing demand for enhanced onboard power management systems with the introduction of two new transformer add-ons.  SmartBoost 50 was designed as a separate boost control unit that can be connected to any 12Kva or 15Kva (50-amp) isolation transformer – including competitive models. The result is a 13 percent AC voltage boost to any existing 50-amp transformer.  Another addition to the company’s AC solutions is the new SoftStartTM (SST) module that can be added to any standard transformer or boosting transformer.  The module is designed to regulate power and eliminate tripping of dockside breakers from initial in-rush current.  This feature is extremely important to the international market and parts of North America where circuit breakers on shore power pedestals are notoriously sensitive.  “This type of technology is especially desirable at a time when customers are looking to upgrade their existing systems.  For dealers, the SmartBoost and SoftStart technology are easy to sell because they will work with any existing transformer,” said St. Romain.

To meet the needs of small boat owners, the new BattComTM was designed to automate charging and eliminate the need for battery isolators on boats ranging in size from 15 – 29’.  A waterproof battery combiner available in 12 or 24 volt with 280 amp capacity, BattCom eliminates the need for battery isolators and battery switches and provides a heavier current capacity than any other battery combiner on the market.  The microprocessor controlled BattCom automatically detects charging power from an alternator or battery charger and combines the main and reserve batteries for charging.  Upon stopping the engine or removing the battery charger, BattCom will disconnect, allowing both batteries to provide power independently of each other.

Known for its high quality AC and DC electrical products, Charles Industries develops and manufactures all products in the United States at the company’s fully owned and operated ISO 9001:2000 manufacturing facilities strategically located in the Midwest.

CHARLES MARINE INTRODUCES NEW AC POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - PM3-100 Provides Large Yachts With 200 Amp Service

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (July 1, 2008) – The list of standard equipment on board a new yacht is almost endless.  Audio/visual, lighting, water heaters and a myriad of appliances are taxing on the average onboard electrical infrastructure.  Charles Marine has solved this critical challenge with the introduction of their new PM3-100 AC Power Management System.  “Viking Yachts came to us with a request to develop a flexible onboard power management system that delivers the necessary 200 amp service that is becoming more commonplace on today’s large yachts,” states Lyle St. Romain, Managing Director of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “Our engineers created an intelligent system that isolates and regulates dockside power to protect on-board systems from voltage drops, spikes and surges that are typically associated with the inconsistency of shore-side power,” adds St. Romain.  Based on successful sales of the company’s PM3, a smaller 100 amp system, Charles expects similar results for the new PM3-100.

Developed for the 55’ plus yacht market, the system provides boat builders with greater freedom in managing onboard loads up to a maximum of 200 amps (while connecting to two 240 volt 100 amp shore power pedestals).  Its unique, three-piece modular design enables the builder to distribute its weight and size as required onboard the vessel.  Yacht owners gain the ability to operate the maximum rated amount of AC electrical equipment without the worry of exceeding load capacity.  Provided shore-power is available, the PM3-100 will supply a minimum of 100 amps, maximum of 200 amps to the vessel’s main distribution point.

Built into the PM3-100 are (2) 12KVA voltage boosting isolation transformers and microprocessor-controlled electronics that check for shore-side anomalies such as incorrect phasing, low/high voltage, loss of shore-side input as well as prevent against galvanic corrosion.  The unit includes a pre-wired remote panel with a 20-character VFD display for remote monitoring and keypad/display on the main control unit that is ideal for in-field diagnostics as well as providing users with the ability to monitor the current onboard power processes at all times.

CHARLES MARINE INTRODUCES NEW ISOLATION TRANSFORMER - IsoBoost SST Offers Built-In SoftStart Technology and Voltage Boosting Performance

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (June 10, 2008) – As the demand for onboard electronics and amenities continue to climb, the need for more power and enhanced onboard power management systems has increased dramatically.   Charles Marine & Industrial Group, US manufacturer of high quality AC and DC electrical products, today announced the introduction of their new 50 and 100amp IsoBoost models with SoftStartTM.  The new isolation transformer with voltage boosting performance offers the reliability and assurance that adequate voltage is supplied to all of the onboard AC equipment, regardless of the quality of fluctuating dockside power.  The new IsoBoost SST detects 50 Hz (International) or 60 Hz (North America) electrical systems and automatically adjusts its output voltage and boost threshold to provide optimal voltage for the vessel.  In the event AC dockside power drops below a preset threshold, the IsoBoost SST boosts AC dockside voltage 15%.  Engineered with SoftStartTM technology (SST), the new IsoBoost SST also limits the in-rush power, eliminating nuisance tripping of dockside circuit breakers.  This feature is extremely important to the International market and parts of North America where circuit breakers on shore power pedestals are notoriously sensitive.

Charles Marine manufacturers 90% of marine boosting isolation transformers worldwide.  The introduction of the new IsoBoost SST is a significant addition to the company’s current offering of high performance isolation transformers.  “Feedback from OEMs was a critical factor in the development of the new SoftStart Technology,” states Lyle St. Romain, Managing Director of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “We’re pleased to offer customers an upgraded isolation transformer with superior performance and technology,” adds St. Romain.  Charles isolation transformers are the only transformers designed specifically for the marine industry that are Marine UL Listed, meet all ABYC & NMMA standards as well as CE standards for European use.  Constructed with a full current carrying shield, Charles isolation transformers allow the boat’s electrical system to be completely isolated from shore, diminishing the potential for in-water shock hazards and eliminating the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.

Charles Marine Introduces upgraded Marine Isolation Transformer - New ISO-G2 Delivers Safety and Reliability in a Compact Package

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (March 21, 2006) – Once considered a viable solution primarily for large yachts, isolation transformers have made their way onto equipment lists of boaters who demand safe and clean power onboard smaller vessels.   Isolation transformers not only prevent galvanic corrosion but also protect onboard electrical systems and electronics from potential shore side hazards including reverse polarity, “lost neutrals” on 120/240 systems, voltage transients, spikes and noise.

The introduction of Charles Marine’s new ISO-G2 is a significant addition to the company’s current offering of high performance isolation transformers.   Several enhancements to the ISO-G2 include a lightweight design (60 pounds) and easy-to-install terminal blocks with wiring options to accommodate both horizontal and vertical installation.  The new 30 amp

ISO-G2 Isolation Transformer Series is available in both 3.6kVA and 3.8kVA models, providing a simple solution for smaller vessels in North America and overseas.  ISO-G2 will replace the current line of ISO-Guard isolation transformers.

“Customer feedback and continuous improvement are driving forces behind product development at Charles Marine,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “We’re pleased to offer customers an upgraded isolation transformer with superior performance for the same price,” adds St. Romain.

Charles isolation transformers are the only transformers designed specifically for the marine industry that are Marine UL Listed, meet all ABYC & NMMA standards and have CE certification for European use.
Constructed with a full current carrying shield, Charles isolation transformers allow the boat’s electrical system to be completely isolated from shore, diminishing the potential for in-water shock hazards and eliminating the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.

CHARLES MARINE TO HOST LIFE SAVING SEMINAR AT YACHT RENDEZVOUS - ‘Beating the Odds of Sudden Cardiac Arrest’ Offered At DeFever Winter Rendezvous

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (January 24, 2007) – Winter is an ideal time for serious boaters to contemplate and schedule their next cruising voyage.  For DeFever Cruisers, an enthusiastic group of approximately 900 boaters worldwide, this year’s winter rendezvous will be the kick-off for planning spring cruising adventures.  This annual event will be held Friday, January 26th through Monday, January 29th, 2007 at the new Club at Hammock Beach in Palm Coast, Florida.  As part of the seminar series, Charles Marine, the exclusive marine distributor for the Samaritan® AED (automated external defibrillator) will be hosting a seminar  -  Lifesaving Defibrillators-Beating the Odds of Sudden Cardiac Arrest’ during the event.  “After searching out experts on lifesaving equipment for boaters, we approached Charles Marine with the opportunity to present a seminar on the topic of portable defibrillators,” states Hank Haeseker, seminar chair.  “Our members are interested in learning more about how they can keep themselves and their crew safe during a potentially fatal episode of sudden cardiac arrest while under way,” Haesker added.

The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that between 225,000 - 300,000 people die suddenly each year in the U.S. from coronary heart disease, most before ever reaching a hospital. In general, for every minute that passes between the onset of cardiac arrest and defibrillation the rate of survival decreases by 7 to 10 percent.  Portable defibrillators can be a key factor for increased survival rate of a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).   “Charles Marine strongly suggests the addition of an AED to boat emergency kits,” states Lyle St. Romain, Managing Director of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “It makes perfect sense to have a portable defibrillator on-board your vessel where medical attention can often be more difficult to access than on land,” adds St. Romain.  Advocates for safe boating, Charles Marine has hosted lifesaving seminars for various events including TrawlerFest and Key West Race Week.

Designed with everyday people in mind, HeartSine’s new PAD (personal access defibrillator) includes an interface that guides even the most infrequent user through the rescue process. Using audio prompts and three simple illuminated icons, the PAD will clearly guide the rescuer through each step.  The compact water-resistant and shockproof unit weighs less than two pounds and is sold as a complete package including the Samaritan PAD, prep-kit, two Pad-Paks (each including a set of defibrillator pads with a 6-hour battery capable of delivering more than 30 shocks) and a carry case.

CHARLES MARINE & HEARTSINE TECHNOLOGIES PROVIDE LIFE SAVING DEFIBRILLATORS TO NORDHAVN ATLANTIC RALLY - Samaritan® AED Part of Escort Boats’ Safety Provisions

CHICAGO, IL. (July 1, 2004) – Charles Marine and HeartSine Technologies provided life saving portable defibrillators to the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 2004 (NAR) which finished successfully in Gibraltar on June 27th.  This invitational event brought 18 long-range trawler yachts together to make the 3,500-mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.  To ensure safety of all participants, all three Nordhavns serving as escort vessels were outfitted with HeartSine’s portable Samaritan AEDs (automated external defibrillator).

HeartSine Technologies provided basic life support training including CPR and medical instruction on defibrillator usage to all Nordhavn owners/operators prior to departure from Ft. Lauderdale on May 16th.  Dr. Ware, chief medical director of the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally quoted, “Having the Samaritan AEDs on board the official escort vessels gave us peace of mind that we were prepared for the event of any passenger experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.”  He added, “Having AEDs on board long distance cruising vessels can be as important as carrying life preservers”.  The American Heart Association estimates that between 225,000 - 300,000 people die suddenly each year in the U.S. from coronary heart disease, most before ever reaching a hospital.  In general, for every minute that passes between the onset of cardiac arrest and defibrillation the rate of survival decreases by 7 to 10 percent

Lightweight and portable, the unit weighs a mere 4.2 lbs. with a long lasting battery of 12 hours of monitoring or 120 shocks (at full energy).  Of great importance is the clear and concise operation with easy to follow voice and text prompts as well as a large message display to guide the first responder.  The Samaritan’s Data-Pak™ is a battery and data storage in one product whereby event information is recorded and can be easily downloaded to any standard PC for evaluation by medical personnel.  The Samaritan can immediately return to service and save another life. Each Samaritan AED includes a soft carrying case, 2 sets of pads, a quick reference card and an operators manual for reviewing optimum operation.  The Samaritan AED sells for $2,200 and can be purchased through West Marine.

U.S. ARMY CHOOSES CHARLES MARINE BATTERY CHARGERS - Customized Battery Chargers Outfit U.S. Army Tanks Overseas

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (June 15, 2004) – Charles Industries, Ltd. was awarded a contract from the U.S. Army for three hundred seven (307) customized battery chargers which were recently installed on M-1 Abrams tanks for deployment overseas.  Designed for use in extreme terrain, components of the chargers were upgraded to military specifications and include a preinstalled 15’ heavy-duty 10-gauge cord set.  The recent order from the Department of Defense is in addition to several military contracts for Charles electrical products including  specialty transformers and waterproof battery chargers.

Also involving the Department of Defense, the company supplied transformers to the U.S. Air Force in order to power up secure satcom phone terminals. Units were bundled in protective transit cases to be dropped by parachute into remote areas of Iraq and Afghanistan.  Working in conjunction with Department of Homeland Security, Charles was chosen by the FAA to provide large transformers to be used in powering anti-terrorist “wave off” runway lights at all major U.S. airports to warn aircraft in the event of possible terrorist attacks.

When asked about the growing demand for products manufactured by Charles Industries, the company sited several reasons for the increased business from government and military branches.  “Charles meets many of the required criteria of high quality products for military use,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “In addition, all Charles products are made in the USA and we are an ISO 9001:2000
certified company with many products meeting the stringent qualifications for Marine UL Listing.  These qualifications are all serious considerations for the U.S. Government when deciding on a contract vendor,” adds St. Romain.

In a strategy to manage and increase the volume of military and government business, Charles Marine & Industrial Group has recently appointed Jim Hughes as an independent Government Programs Representative.  A seasoned veteran of the marine industry, he recently held the position of Global Manager Government/Military Sales for Raymarine, Inc., leading manufacturer of marine electronics.  Hughes is currently working on securing Charles Industries as an official GSA/GSA Advantage vendor to simplify sales of Charles Marine & Industrial products to the Federal Government.  He will be representing the company at the upcoming MACC (Multi-Agency Craft Conference) in Norfolk, Virginia June 15 –17.

Charles Industries Owner Donates Sailboat to Shake-A-Leg Miami - ‘Liberator’ Christened at Grand Opening of Watersports Center

CHICAGO, IL. (May 25, 2004) – Joe Charles, owner of Charles Industries donated a 20’ Catalina Freedom Independence sailboat to Shake-A-Leg Miami (SALM).   A non-profit organization working in partnership with the City of Miami, SALM provides recreational and educational activities for adults and children with disabilities.  The newest member of the SALM fleet, appropriately named ‘Liberator’ was christened on May 1st, 2004 during the grand opening of the organization’s world-class watersports center.  Harry Horgan, founder and executive director of Shake-A-Leg Miami stated, “Our motto has always been ‘launching boats and dreams’.”  Horgan added, “It’s with generous contributions from people like the Charles family that allow us to carry out our mission.”   Liberator is one of nine Freedom Independence sailboats at Shake-A-Leg Miami’s watersports center originally designed and built by Everett Pearson, president of Tillotson Pearson Inc.  Designed to be universally accessible, the unique sailboat has two swivel seats and all lines coming to the cockpit to give wheelchair-bound individuals maximum safety and control.  Liberator will be used as part of the organization’s extensive program offering sailing instruction and sailboat racing.

The roots of Shake-A-Leg Miami go back to 1982, when Shake-A-Leg was founded in Newport, Rhode Island by Harry Horgan.  Paralyzed after an accident in 1980, Horgan discovered during his own rehabilitation that the physically-challenged need a place where they can build confidence and strengthen their bodies following traditional hospital based rehabilitation.  Dr. Barth Green, neurosurgeon and director of the applied research programs of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis recognized this pioneering work and convinced Shake-A-Leg to expand its operation to Miami where he co-founded Shake-A-Leg Miami in 1990.  Operating in partnership with the City of Miami Parks Department, the organization offers a fully inclusive education and recreation center and the largest adaptive watersports center in the United States.   The facility includes state-of-the-art equipment, experienced staff, multi-disciplined and comprehensive recreation and training programs for people with disabilities and disadvantaged youth in the South Florida area.

Joe Charles stated, “The Charles family is pleased to sponsor the Shake-A-Leg Miami foundation and to support their mission of making dreams come true and enabling people to achieve their goals.”

CHARLES MARINE INTRODUCES AC POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - C-PowerMaster Offers Onboard AC System Protection, Enhancement and Flexibility

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (February 9, 2004) – Charles Marine & Industrial Group introduced the C-PowerMaster, a self-contained AC management system that converts (2) 240 volt, 50 amp input sources into (1) single 100 amp onboard vessel supply.  Developed for the 55’ plus yacht market, the system provides boat builders with greater freedom in managing onboard loads.  In turn, yacht owners have the ability to operate the maximum rated amount of AC electrical equipment without the worry of exceeding load capacity.  “One of our key OEM customers came to us with the challenge of developing a flexible onboard power management system that delivers the necessary 100 amp service that is becoming more commonplace on today’s large yachts,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “Our engineers created an intelligent AC power management system that isolates and regulates dockside power to protect on-board systems from voltage drops, spikes and surges that are typically associated with the inconsistency of shore-side power,” adds St. Romain.

Built into the C-PowerMaster are (2) 12KVA voltage boosting isolation transformers and microprocessor-controlled electronics that check for shore-side anomalies such as incorrect phasing, low/high voltage, loss of shore-side input and missing ground as well as prevent against galvanic corrosion.  The unit includes a pre-wired remote panel with a 20-character TFT display and keypad that is ideal for in-field diagnostics as well as providing users with the ability to monitor the current onboard power processes at all times.  Provided shore-power is available, the C-PowerMaster will supply a minimum of 50 amps, maximum of 100 amps to the vessel’s main distribution point, converting any frequency, phase and voltage to the yacht's exact electrical requirements.

The Company plans to introduce the C-PowerMaster at the Miami International Boat Show during the Charles Solid Power Press Conference on February 12th at 10:00am (Miami Beach Convention Center, Room A202).

CHARLES MARINE TEAMS UP WITH HEARTSINE TECHNOLOGIES AND WEST MARINE TO OFFER LIFE SAVING PRODUCTS TO BOATERS - Adding the Samaritan® AED to Your Boat’s Emergency Kit Could Help You Save A Life

CHICAGO, IL. (February 4, 2004) – Charles Marine & Industrial Group announced today its designation as exclusive marine distributor for HeartSine Technologies’ Samaritan® AED (automated external defibrillator).  Charles and HeartSine have partnered with West Marine to act as the exclusive marine retailer of the Samaritan AED in 2004.  “We are pleased to offer boaters an innovative product from the leading manufacturer of AEDs in conjunction with West Marine, a leader in the marine retail industry,” adds St. Romain.

Considered standard equipment in many airports, cruise ships, government offices, hospitals, schools, restaurants and numerous public places, portable defibrillators can be a key factor for increased survival rate of a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).  “It just makes sense that boaters prepare themselves with the ability to respond to a medical emergency that could occur at any time on the water,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.

As a pioneer in portable defibrillation, HeartSine’s Chief Technology Officer, Professor John Anderson, developed and introduced the first highly portable unit in 1967.  Since then, his mission has been the research and development of an optimal unit that provides outstanding clinical efficacy and is easily used by the public.  Under this direction and 35 years of internationally recognized clinical expertise, HeartSine’s latest innovative, user-friendly, portable AED is the SamaritanÒ.

“Safety is paramount with West Marine,” states West Marine’s Ken Corwin, Senior Vice President and General Merchandise Manager.  “The Samaritan AED is a life saving device in time with new technology and we strongly believe that it’s a product every boater should consider having onboard,“ adds Corwin.  Charles Marine, West Marine and HeartSine Technologies will join together in the introduction of the Samaritan AED at the Miami International Boat Show during the Charles Solid Power Press Conference on February 12th at 10:00am (Miami Beach Convention Center, Room A202).

CHARLES MARINE INTRODUCES NEW CUSTOMIZED BATTERY CHARGERS - 2000 and 5000 SP Series Offer Enhanced Performance and Value to Boaters

CHICAGO, IL. (January 28, 2004) – Charles Marine & Industrial Group introduced two new series of electronic battery chargers with a unique battery type selectable switch.  Offering 3-stage charging, the ability to simultaneously charge up to 3 battery banks and work as a power supply, the new 2000 & 5000 SP Series are ideal for any size boat, power or sail.  “Development and introduction of our new high performance SP chargers were based on the demand from consumers and retailers for battery chargers that are user friendly and provide optimal performance,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “Now when a boat owner changes or upgrades his battery type, he simply has to change the battery switch on the back of the SP charger to select lead acid, gel cell or AGM battery type.  Not only does the consumer save money by not having to purchase a new charger, retailers can stock one battery charger with a single part number and accommodate three different type batteries,” adds St. Romain, “In addition, the development of these new chargers provided us with an opportunity to manufacture a better, more robust product for our customers.”  The new chargers are clearly labeled on the front of the unit advising the boater to select the proper battery type, in order to avoid adverse effects on both the charger and batteries.

Production of the new Charles SP Series began at the end of 2003 with plans for all current models to be switched over by May 2004.  The entry level 2000 SP Series is available in 120 VAC, 50/60Hz models for 12-volt output and are manufactured by Charles Industries on the same assembly line as the higher end 5000 SP Series.  The 5000 SP Series is available in 120 and 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz models for 12 and 24-volt output and has passed stringent testing to achieve 'Marine UL Listed’ status and CE approval.  Both the 2000 and 5000 SP Series meet ABYC and USCG standards and carry two-year and five-year warranties, respectively.  All SP battery chargers are manufactured in the USA.

Stocked on retail shelves in the company’s newly designed ‘Solid Power’ point of purchase packaging, consumers can now purchase the battery chargers that a majority of U.S. OEMs have chosen as standard onboard equipment.  Charles Marine is pleased to report customers of the 2000 and 5000 SP Series include the RNLI (Royal Navy Lifesaving Institute), United States Coast Guard, (standard on 87’ Coastal Patrol Boats) as well as large military contracts to supply over 300 chargers for the U.S. Army’s M1 Abrams tanks.  The Company plans to introduce the 2000 and 5000 SP Series battery chargers at the Miami International Boat Show during the Charles Solid Power Press Conference on February 12th at 10:00am (Miami Beach Convention Center, Room A202).

CHARLES MARINE & INDUSTRIAL GROUP ACHIEVES NEW ISO 9001:2000 CERTIFICATION - New Standards Focus Company on Continuous Improvement

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL. (November 10, 2003) – Charles Marine & Industrial Group announced their recent upgrade to ISO 9001:2000 certification.  Previously registered to 1994 standards, the company underwent a stringent certification audit in order to qualify for the latest ISO standards (ISO 9001:2000 is the latest ISO standard; companies are required to become certified to 9001:2000 standards by 12/31/03 or lose ISO certification).  Following a two-day audit of Charles headquarters in Rolling Meadows, IL and the company’s manufacturing facilities in Casey, IL, ISO 9001:2000 certification was awarded to the manufacturer of high quality, innovative AC and DC electrical products.  The audit included a management review process, examination of procedural documentation and assessment of quality processes.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards and is recognized internationally.  The revised version of the new standard (ISO 9001:2000) significantly improves upon the previous version by requiring organizations to consider their activities as “linked” and so adopt a “process approach” to their quality management system.  The standard also shifts focus from a compliance standpoint to one of “continual improvement”.

“Focusing our operation within a ‘growth through quality’ initiative, improvement is continuous at all levels of the Marine & Industrial business and results in high quality products for Charles customers, says Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “We’re very proud of the dedication of our employees to continually improve quality at Charles, and respectful of ISO’s framework for analyzing errors that allows our company to improve operations”.  ISO performs bi-annual audits to ensure quality issues are addressed and procedures are followed.

CHARLES
INTRODUCES THE “ON-THE-GO” KIT TO TAKE THE GUESSWORK OUT OF ADDING ONBOARD AC POWER

ROLLING MEADOWS, ILL. (March 31, 2003) - People are accustomed to using AC power in their everyday lives.  For most, not a day goes by without using a product that is plugged into a 120 volt outlet. Today’s boaters want the same conveniences onboard yet many have a fear of adding AC power to the boat.  Charles Industries, Ltd. introduces its new “On-the-Go” kit, an all-in-one starter kit for boaters who want a simple means to add AC power on the boat in order to power electronics and appliances.

Simple enough for the boater to install himself, the Charles “On-the-Go” Kit comes complete with a 1000 watt tru-sinewave inverter, a waterproof GFCI outlet with 13’ of cable, a remote display/control panel with 11’ of cable, a pair of 2-gauge red/black 4’ cables with ring terminal connectors to attach the inverter to the batteries and a set of screws and washers.   All of the kit’s components are “plug-n-play” with nothing for the boater to hard wire.  Installation is as simple as attaching the ring terminals to the battery (not included) and screwing the unit down to the boat.

Designed for the marine environment with rugged, corrosion-resistant materials, the Charles “On-the-Go” Kit will provide years of trouble-free power.  Lightweight and portable, the kit is easily moved from a boat to an RV, camper or truck, providing AC power wherever desired.  The unit can be used on a wide variety of boats and is approved for use with many types of appliances including TVs, blenders, coffee makers and other AC-powered equipment.

“Even on a small boat, an owner now has the opportunity to spend a Sunday afternoon out on the water while watching his favorite NFL team on TV,” remarks Lyle St. Romain, General Manager of Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “With our new ‛On-the-Go’ Kit, this same customer can then take the kit from his boat to his RV and tailgate with friends at the big Monday Night game,” adds St. Romain.

CHARLES INDUSTRIES OFFERS SOLUTION TO GALVANIC CORROSION. New Marine UL Listed ISO-GUARD Isolation Transformer Series Introduced.

ROLLING MEADOWS, ILL. (March 31, 2003) - Galvanic corrosion is a problem for all boat owners.  If not dealt with, dissimilar metals in contact with the water may disintegrate, appliances on the boat may cease to work and the areas surrounding the boat may contain electricity.  Currently, many boaters rely on galvanic isolators to prevent corrosion. However, recent revisions to ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) standards require additional installation of a status monitor when using a galvanic isolator to ensure that the isolator is operating properly.   Installation of both systems requires additional space and increases installation time and cost for the boat builder.  In addition, galvanic isolators do not provide any protection from potential shore side hazards.

Charles Industries, Ltd. has introduced a viable ABYC approved alternative to using a galvanic isolator/status monitor combination.  The new 30 amp ISO-GUARD Isolation Transformer Series is available in both 3.6kVA and 3.8kVA models, providing a simple solution for smaller vessels in North America and overseas.  The new ISO-GUARD isolation transformers not only prevent galvanic corrosion but also protect onboard electrical systems and electronics from potential shore side hazards including voltage transients, spikes and noise.  Constructed with a full current carrying shield, Charles isolation transformers allow the boat to be completely isolated from shore, providing protection similar to “a bird on a wire”.  In addition, the transformers diminish the potential for water shock hazards and eliminate the need for galvanic isolators and polarization alarms.

“After investigating solutions to accommodate ABYC’s latest standards, we decided to focus on what we know and do best – isolation transformers,” states Lyle St. Romain, General Manager for Charles Marine & Industrial Group.  “Our new ISO-GUARD Series is the result of months of research and development applying proven magnetics expertise to a cost-effective solution for the boat builder,” adds St. Romain.

Charles manufactures its own transformers in southern Illinois.  The new Charles ISO-GUARD 3.6kVA and 3.8kVA 30 amp isolation transformers are compact, measuring 9.65” x 10.5” x 9.0”.  Production units are Marine UL listed and will be available by mid-April of 2003.  For more information regarding these products, visit the Charles website at www.charlesindustries.com or e-mail Charles at mktserv@charlesindustries.com.
